Museums and Interpretation Centres
The municipalities of Fundão and Covilhã, as well as their respective parishes, communities and other institutions, have made an effort to provide the territory of with interpretive media, or local museums, that preserve the memory of people, places, activities and knowledge. Some spaces are permanently open to the public and others require an appointment.
Barroca Grande Mining Museum
This place was born due to the will and work of one man, José Luiz Campos, mayor and worker at the Panasqueira mines, that along the years collected equipment, photographs and various documentation.
Casa Museu do Rancho Folclórico de Unhais da Serra
This exhibition space is housed in a traditional house. Collecting a variety of a varied nature, from daily domestic and agricultural objects, even musical instruments and phonographic and photographic records.
Casa Museu Marmelo e Silva
José Marmelo e Silva, self defined himself as a writer that did not write to sell books; a sentence reveals a singular man, in personality and in writing.
Casa-Museu D. Ilda Valentina Mesquita
Besides recreating the atmosphere of a regional house, with the corresponding furniture and utensils, this house has a remarkable collection of late 19th and early 20th century costumes
Casa-Museu Monsenhor Joaqui Alves Brás
This space was dedicated to the life and work of Monsenhor Joaquim Alves Brás, who was born here in 1899. The evocation of the figure through a combination of objects that accompanied his day to day life.
Centre of Interpretation of Argemela
Even though the focus has been on the history of mining at Cabeço or the Argemela Mountain Range, and the historic geology that led to the formation of its mineral deposits, this interpretative centre has the characteristics of a true site museum or eco-museum.
Centre of Interpretation of Prehistoric Art of Poço do Caldeirão
oused in an old 18th Century manor house, the Casa Grande da Barroca, its contents include the representations and informative elements and the interpretation of prehistoric art examples existing in Poço do Caldeirão.
Centre of Sacred Art / Chapel of Souls
The Centre of Sacred Art and the Chapel of Souls, have very interesting examples of religious life, whether it be on an architectural level or decorative art.
Ethnographic Museum
The collection of this space is essentially made up of ethnographic objects related to agricultural and domestic activities and local trades. However, at S. Jorge da Beira.
Forest School
Under the responsibility of Queiró – Forest Association, the Forest School takes place in an old primary school, with an exhibition space about the local forest species and an auditorium.
House of Bombo (Drum)
The art of making and playing bombos (drums), a very embedded tradition in this region, is evoked here.
House of Honey
Run by Pinus Verde, the House of Honey (Casa do Mel) is a support and meeting point for bee-keepers of the region, and also an interpretive area about honey, for the general public.
The Weaving House
The Fundão Municipality has began creating a series of thematic museum centres, related to the knowledge and practices, particularly expressed in the settlements where they are located.
