Estrela Sul

Local products and handcrafts

The diversity in the orography and occupation of the soil of the southern Estrela territory is in the origin of a great variety of products of local origin. The honey from different melliferous floras is one of the most representing and expressive products, as well as the goat’s and sheep’s cheese. The “medronho aguardente” is an ex libris of the parishes of vale do Zêzere and Açor. The corn bread is still made the traditional way at Cortes de Meio.

Regarding the handcrafts, weaving is a very old tradition, still practised locally, with Janeiro de Cima; the art of making bombos (drums) is still ongoing in Lavacolhos. Basketry and wooden objects are crafts that even though are rare, still persist.
