Estrela

Being the highest mountain in Portugal, Estrela is well-known amongst the Portuguese, which is part of a certain national imagination where the elements of snow, sheep, shepherds, cheese and woollen goods are always present, even for those that have never gone up to the Tower (the highest point).

However, beyond the myths, created and demystified along the centuries – from its lakes being connected to the sea, from its peak you could sea the Pyranees, that Zêzere, Alva and Mondego come from the same source – The Estrela is holding more and more important values: a remarkable biodiversity, which comes from rare and vulnerable habitats, a water reserve of exceptional quality, a strong regional identity to which knowledge is linked to the confection of differentiated products and an entire territory with immense potential for various forms of nature tourism.
